Since 1990, the S&P 500 Index (SPX) has had an average gain of 1.09% in May and has been positive 21 out of the past 29 times. Consumer Staples, Info, Tech. and Health Care have been the best performing sectors with average gains of 1.90%, 1.68% and 1.64%, respectively. The three sectors with the worst performance are Real Estate, Utilities and the Communication Services sectors with average returns of 0.52%, 0.42% and 0.33%, respectively.
